Cocoon
Public Space installation (2015)

In view of the lack of sheltered areas at the sunken plaza, students spend most of the time indoors and the area is underutilized. The main aim of the project is to provide an outdoor area of relaxation and comfort to students, at all times, and to give the sunken plaza a new lease of life. Thus, a three-part shelter, mostly made up of inflatables, was birthed. This shelter provides shade from the hot sun in the day, and emits light in the dark. The LED light wires that are lined along its interior run solely on solar power. Inflatables were chosen due to its lightweight nature and that it usually used to inspire fun. The lightweight nature of inflatables makes it easy to be rearranged by the students, giving them more arrangement options within the space. Furthermore, inspiration was derived from the organic and natural forms of the cocoon and beehive. Just like how a cocoon is a place of growth, the shelter seeks to serve as a sanctuary to students, who are on their journey of growth and self-discovery. Dimensions: W 300 X L 329 X H 278 cm |
